New Community Centre on Mill Road officially named by residents
DETAILS about a new highly sustainable community centre on the former Cambridge City Council Depot site off Mill Road have been unveiled ahead of the new centre being completed in Autumn 2022.
The new centre will provide much needed facilities and meeting spaces for the local community and will include: a 133 metre square hall with a sprung floor for sports and exercise and community events; a fully equipped community kitchen; a 30 metre square meeting room; a small 1:1 meeting room/office space; accessible toilets; and a courtyard garden.
It will be operated by a partnership of two local organisations: Romsey Mill Trust and Petersfield Area Community Trust. Following a public consultation on the name of the new centre, the centre has now also been formally named – in line with a clear preference from residents – as Mill Road Community Centre.
The new community centre will be a welcoming, inclusive environment for all local people to access important services, and to enjoy community activities and events. We’re really happy that the new Mill Road Community Centre has been designed in consultation with residents and will give access to a new facility which will meet their needs when it opens in a few months’ time.Cllr Alex Collis, Executive Councillor for Open Spaces, Food Justice and Community Development
The council has developed Mill Road Community Centre in partnership with housing developer Hill – through the Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP) – as part of the Ironworks flagship housing development scheme. The scheme includes 118 council rented homes and 118 homes for private ownership. The council intends that sale of the private homes will provide an income through sale to reinvest into future new council housing in the city.
The new Ironworks housing development on Mill Road is a really important project for us, delivering many much-needed new homes. We are really proud of what we are delivering at Mill Road, and are looking forward to the opening of the highly sustainable Mill Road Community Centre, which will form a focal point within the heart of this new community later this year.Cllr Gerri Bird, Executive Councillor for Housing at Cambridge City Council and CIP board member
